 April 9, 2009
Dear Fifth Grade Families,
It is hard to believe that we have begun the fourth quarter of fifth grade already. Next Monday we will be setting some goals for learning in order to finish out the year with greater success. A strong end to fifth grade will be beneficial in the transition to middle school in August.
Also on Monday look to receive the math data folder as well as a collection of literacy and science graded work. We will first analyze our performance on these work samples in order to set our goals. The math folder must be returned to school but all of the other papers can be kept at home.
We started Unit 7 in Everyday Mathematics. This unit covers exponents and negative numbers. Ask your child to tell you a little bit about exponential form, prime factorization or scientific notation. Wow! That does sound impressive. (The students know these concepts, but they struggle with matching the names to the ideas.)
We will be taking a break from science for the month of April while we look closely at the American Revolution. We are working on a class simulation of revolutionary times. Ask your child to tell you his/her colonial name and job. Also ask if he/she is a Patriot, Loyalist, or and Undecided Citizen.
In writing we are continuing with our poetry unit. We have learned about and practiced writing several different forms, and are currently composing a poetry booklet.
The genre in reading this month is historical fiction. We have listened to one read-aloud set in revolutionary times. We are also embarking upon a class novel-study of the book My Brother Sam is Dead.
Have a pleasant weekend,
Mrs. Allen
